Built in the XVIth century, the provincial «bastide» survived the earthquake of 1909 (6,2 on the Richter scale!). Witness to this drama, the foothills now support the heavy stone walls. Nathalie Souzan used to be a doctor but is now at the bedside of the vineyard. In the old farmhouse she lives in, the winemaker created three beautiful rooms attended by couples and families who love nature. When she is not in the vineyard, Nathalie let people try samples of wine in the wine testing vault or in the main room of the «bastide». You feel safe here, away from the rest of the world…
Peace in the vineyard
220 meters above the sea level, the Château Grand Callamand looks down at the Valley of Durance, the Luberon and the Country of Aix. Your look, from the doorstep of the bed and breakfast rooms, will see far away beyond the hills, the forest and the vineyards. During the summertime, when the heat fires the lowland, you can still find a slight breeze of homely air and relieve yourself from the heat by the swimming pool. The rooms «The Insolite» and «The Arch» are set in the vaulted rooms of the ground floor. Make them your shelter without any hesitation. Nathalie tells the story of the old wine cellars existing above the rooms…
A glass of black wine in the moonlight
22 hectares of vines surround the property and the forest seems to protect it like a shield. Most of the grape vines are more than 20-30 years old, some are even 50 years old. 2/3 of the wines produced by Nathalie at the Château Grand Callamand are labelled AOP Luberon (the caves are named «Vous», «Nous», «Ils»). It is not the case of the Black wine (IGP Méditerranée) which is though the special cuvée of the winemaker. Its deep robe, almost the colour of the coal, generates curiosity. This 100% Alicante comes from 60-years-old grape vines. These ones are rooted in «the Aubettes», perched, isolated plateau. But let Nathalie tell the story of the wine and the way she harvests the grapes and let the herb grows on them… flavors of cherry red fruit and cacao leave a print on this story. We could definitely stay the whole summer here, in Provence, following the singing of the birds and the rhythm of the moon.
