Two dovecotes serve as the frame of the property which then appears as a painting. Fountains and sculptures welcome you… La Provence made of its traditional buildings and olive trees hides real gems in its sunny land. Only fifteen kilometers from Aix-en-Provence, the Château de Fonscolombe, reopened last spring in June, has turned into a 5 stars hotel. Built at the XVIIIth century, the building, classified as patrimonial, is faithful to the style Quattrocento and used to belong to the Saporta marquis and the Fonscolombe marquis. Thanks to the paleo-botanist Gaston Saporta, the vegetal diversity of the 10 acres arboretum which shapes the property, is amazing. More than 180 species of trees and plants have been listed there. Nearby, the 17 acres vineyard grows, slowly but surely, and turns into a three colors production.
Luxury life at the Castle de Fonscolombe.
It took 18 months of precise rehabilitation to regain the charm of the castle’s early architectural flavor. From sitting rooms to boudoirs, you can see the light of the chandeliers reflecting on the tapestries and the carved wooden framing. Here, a library, there, a gallery where you can find a grand piano. You walk around the Château de Fonscolombe on your toes and with your eyes wide opened. 50 rooms and suites are distributed in this historical building and even the new aisle of the castle can now welcome visitors. A restaurant, l’Orangerie, a spa and a hammam and even a fitness room give the place all the luxury and comfort of a modern «castle life».
Ask for the room 203, located in the historical part of the building.
It would be a pity to miss the historical heart of Fonscolombe. In this part of the Château, all the 13 rooms and suites look at the park. Chose the 203, also named the «Room of the Queen». This 50 m2 suite is made of ancient floor tiles on which lays a four-poster bed. It is said that the Queen Mother, Elizabeth, stayed there in 1965 to celebrate her 39th birthday. From this time remains cedar tree from the Atlas she planted herself and which you can see from the bathroom.
When your evening begins, sit in the park to enjoy a glass of white, rosé or red wine. If the wine seems subtle compared to the castle, its elegance and its history, be sure that every sip contributes to the magic of the place.
